The Associated Press has corrected a report that initially misidentified a current German Roman Catholic cardinal as a 19th century socialist philosopher.
“Francis was asked Sunday en route home from Armenia if he agreed with one of his top advisers, German Cardinal Karl Marx, who told a conference in Dublin in the days after the deadly Orlando gay club attack that the church owes an apology to gays for having marginalized them,” the AP’s original story reported.

However, the cardinal’s name is Reinhard Marx. He was born in 1953, and he serves as a special adviser to Pope Francis.
Karl Marx, who was born in 1818, was the German philosopher and socialist who co-authored the “Communist Manifesto” with Friedrich Engels.
The AP story, written by Nicole Winfield, is titled, “Pope: Gays and others marginalized deserve an apology.”
The global newswire eventually issued a correction that read, “This story has been corrected to show that the cardinal’s name is Reinhard Marx, not Karl.”
