Northern Virginia health officials warn of possible measles exposures

Northern Virginia health departments are working to identify people who may have come in contact with someone infected with measles in one of three separate locations from June 2 to June 4.

Health officials have begun informing people that a person infected with measles was at Dulles International Airport June 2, the emergency department at Haymarket Medical Center late June 2, and the emergency department at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

People who were at one of those three locations on those dates are at risk of contracting the virus. While no one has reported symptoms yet, health officials say they may not show signs of infection until June 25.

Officials said people who received both doses of the vaccine are protected, but people who have not been vaccinated should contact their primary care doctors immediately about measures they can take to stave off a possible infection if they were exposed.

If someone begins experiencing symptoms, such as fever and rash, the person should contact their doctors before going to the emergency room to prevent further spreading the virus.

So far, cases have been confirmed in 26 states, and the count reached 1,001 Wednesday, the highest in 27 years.
