Sean Spicer said Wednesday that CNN reporter Jim Acosta sounded like a liberal activist when he mocked some President Trump’s supporters as people whose “elevator might not hit all floors.”
“I don’t mind that from a liberal activist,” Spicer, Trump’s former White House press secretary, said on Fox News on Wednesday in response to Acosta’s remarks. “But when you have a reporter … saying that the people don’t get it, that’s a problem.”
Acosta said in an interview for Variety that some people who might be listening closely to the White House statements against the press don’t realize that Trump is putting on an “act.” Acosta never explicitly said “Trump supporters” or “Trump voters,” but Spicer and others took his comment to be aimed at people who support Trump and might also be frustrated with the press.
“The problem is that people around the country don’t know it’s an act,” Acosta said of Trump’s White House. “They’re not in on the act, and they take what he says very seriously, and they take attacks from [former White House press secretary] Sean Spicer and Sarah Sanders and what they do to us on a daily basis very seriously. They don’t have all their faculties in some cases — their elevator might not hit all floors. My concern is that a journalist is going to be hurt one of these days.”
Spicer said Acosta’s remarks show he doesn’t understand the political change happening across the country.
“It’s sad to see that, in all seriousness, because what I think it continues to show is a lack of understanding,” Spicer said. “For Jim not to understand that, and for him to continue to dismiss and frankly make fun of and ridicule people around this country, is really sad, and really shows you how little of an understanding they have of what’s happening in this country.”
“The lack of his understanding of what’s happening in this country, is still a fundamental problem with so many people in the mainstream, elite media,” Spicer added.
Spicer said he’s writing a book about his time in the White House, and said of Acosta, “I think he’s in the book.”
