Drink and dine with rodents: Pop-up ‘Rat Bar’ opens in San Francisco

A pop-up bar in San Francisco allowed patrons to nibble on food and imbibe on beverages all while surrounded by rats of all types.

For $50, guests to the bar had the opportunity to this past weekend to hold and cuddle with the rodents. The pop-up was opened for three days at The San Francisco Dungeon, a tourist attraction that explores the darker side of the city’s storied history.

The company partnered with Ratical Rodent Rescue, a small-animal shelter focused on rodents that have been abandoned or neglected by their owners, to bring the creatures into the temporary bar. Jenn Paz, who works with the group, pushed back on the notion that rats are vermin and claimed that they actually make good pets.

“Rats are just super amazing pets, they’re social, they’re interactive, they’re intelligent — they’re phenomenal animals,” Paz told ABC 7.

Tickets to the rodent-themed event included a full tour of the San Francisco Dungeon, a free drink, access to the cash bar, and 30 minutes of “play time” with the rodents.
