White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday it’s hard to tell the difference between Democrats and members of the press, and said they’re both working to fight against President Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship.
When Trump’s plan was revealed Tuesday, Democrats and members of the media argued it would violate the Constitution, but Sanders said she’s not surprised.
“I’m not at all surprised that the media and Democrats, which sometimes can be one and the same, could overplay their hand in the way that they’re doing, whether it’s on this issue or anything else that the president brings up,” she said on Fox News.
“This is the party of no, this is the party of obstruction. They have no ideas, they have no policies,” she said of Democrats.
Trump proposed an executive order that would end the practice of treating the newborn children of illegal immigrants in America as U.S. citizens. Trump said some lawyers believe that right can be denied illegal immigrants without violating the language of the 14th Amendment.
Sanders defended Trump’s push in this area by saying Democrats have failed to work with Trump on immigration, which will prompt him to do what he can on his own.
“The reason we’re in this position in the first place is because Democrats have failed to come to the table,” she said. “They have failed to work with this president and pass legislation that helps protect our country, that helps protect the citizens of America, because they do not want to secure our borders, they do not want to have a law and order country.”
