A majority of independent voters in Texas said they wouldn’t vote to reelect President Trump, according to a new poll.
The latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll found 60% percent said they wouldn’t vote for Trump if the election were held today.
“The most interesting and more consequential thing, this far out, is that amongst independents, 60% say they will probably or definitely vote for somebody else,” said Joshua Blank, manager of polling and research for the Texas Politics Project. “Overall, Texas independents tend to be more conservative than liberal and tend to look more like Republicans than like Democrats … and things have gotten worse among independents.”
James Henson, who co-directs the poll, said the independent vote will play a bigger role in the state as Republican candidates’ margins of victory decrease.
Only 10% of Republicans said Trump would not have their backing. That number is predictably much higher among Democrats, with 91% saying they would not vote for Trump.
Among all registered voters in Texas, half would not vote to reelect Trump, the poll found.
The poll surveyed 1,200 registered voters from May 31-June 9. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.83 percentage points.
