Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel on Wednesday slammed former Attorney General Eric Holder and other high-profile Democrats for weaponizing political rhetoric against the GOP.
“Time and again, those on the Left have shown the American people that they do not intend to reverse course and close the ever-widening divide between Americans,” McDaniel wrote in an opinion piece for Fox News. “Their hatred for President Trump has caused them to dig in their heels, dehumanize Republicans and encourage harassment against those who disagree with them. In doing so, they have brought about the death of civility.”
McDaniel’s comments come after it was reported Wednesday that Holder adapted former first lady Michelle Obama’s “When they go low” motto from 2016 at a campaign event in Georgia.
“Michelle always says, ‘When they go low, we go high.’ No. No. When they go low, we kick them,” Holder told attendees, triggering laughter and applause. Later in the speech, he noted he did not mean Democrats should do anything inappropriate or illegal, but that they “have to be tough and we have to fight.”
Holder’s remarks follow 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton telling CNN Tuesday that it was impossible to be civil with a Republican Party “that wants to destroy what you stand for.”
