Paul Ryan calls for more direct sanctions on Russia

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday said the United States “obviously should be applying Russian sanctions” in response to the Syrian chemical attacks.

Ryan, R-Wis., dodged a direct criticism of President Donald Trump, who on Monday appeared to walk back plans to bolster U.S. sanctions against Russia due to the country’s support of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who carried out the chemical attack on civilians.

“I won’t get into what sanctions should be applied other than we obviously should be applying Russian sanctions,” Ryan said when asked about Trump’s apparent reversal.

Ryan called last weekend’s strikes on Syria, carried out by the United States, Britain and France, “the right thing to do.”
