Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s will face negative ads from the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity for her “no” vote on last year’s GOP tax overhaul.
The group is set to start a television and digital ad campaign against the North Dakota Democrat starting Thursday, totaling nearly $450,000.
“Senator Heitkamp has time and again voted to line the pockets of special interests, but when she had the chance to put more money back into the pockets of her constituents, she turned her back,” said Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity.
The 30-second television ad featuring a Heitkamp look-alike criticizes the Democrat for voting for past legislation that included tax breaks for specific industries and businesses, but not for the GOP overhaul of the tax code signed by President Trump in December.
Heitkamp is one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in 2018. Trump won her state by more than 30 points in 2016.
No Democrats voted for the tax legislation, which congressional Republicans have said they hope will help them maintain control of Congress.
Americans for Prosperity also has run ads seeking to penalize endangered Democratic Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Claire McCaskill of Missouri for their tax votes.
