A new nationwide poll has President Trump losing by a large margin when pitted against Joe Biden in a theoretical matchup.
The Quinnipiac poll asked voters who they would choose in a theoretical matchup between the president and various Democratic challengers and Trump did not fare well. Pitted against Biden, the former vice president bested Trump by a 13-point margin, with Biden bringing in 53% to Trump’s 40% support.
“It’s a long 17 months to Election Day, but Joe Biden is ahead by landslide proportions,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll.
Other candidates also edged Trump. Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Cory Booker of New Jersey all came out ahead as did South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
After Biden, Sanders had the widest margin with 51% support to 42% for Trump. The thinnest advantages were for Booker and Buttigieg who both had five-point leads.
Despite the leads, Trump’s approval rating has risen to almost the highest levels ever in the poll.
“The Trump bump to 42 percent job approval is nothing to sniff at. It’s one point shy of the best Quinnipiac University survey number ever for President Trump,” Malloy said.
In addition, 70% of the voters surveyed said the nation’s economy is either “excellent” or “good.” The results coincide with record economic growth since Trump took office.
The poll was conducted from June 6 to June 10 and has a 3.5% margin of error.
