FDA’s Scott Gottlieb returning to conservative think tank

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb will return to the conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank after leaving the government on Friday.

Gottlieb, 46, will focus on drug pricing policy, an area he worked to address as FDA commissioner and a top concern among voters. His new role was first reported in the Washington Post, and AEI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gottlieb, a physician and investor, was an AEI scholar before joining the Trump administration. He headed the FDA, the agency that oversees the safety of food, drinks, medical devices, and medicines, for two years. He’s being replaced by acting commissioner Ned Sharpless, who oversees the National Cancer Institute, the government agency that funds medical research to fight cancer.

Gottlieb announced March 5 that he was resigning from the FDA, saying he was exhausted from commuting every week to Washington, D.C., from his family’s home in Connecticut.
