Trump to skip South America trip to focus on Syria

The White House announced Tuesday that President Trump will be sending Vice President Mike Pence to the eighth Summit of the Americas in his place because he wants to focus on the U.S. response to events in Syria.

“President Trump will not attend the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru or travel to Bogota, Colombia as originally scheduled,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. “At the President’s request, the Vice President will travel in his stead.”

While Pence attends the summit in South America, Trump will remain in the U.S. to respond to the chemical attack in Syria and monitor other world events.

“The President will remain in the United States to oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world,” Sanders said.
