GM, Honda to partner to develop next-generation electric car battery

Honda and General Motors Co. will partner to develop new battery components to help support each company’s plans for all-electric vehicles, the two car manufacturers announced on Thursday.

The companies will work to develop GM’s next-generation battery system, with the expectation that Honda will then source the batteries from the Detroit-based company. The goal of the partnership, they said, is to create batteries with a quicker charge and smaller packaging.

“This new, multiyear agreement with Honda further demonstrates General Motors’ capability to innovate toward a profitable electric portfolio,” Mark Ruess, GM’s executive vice president of global product development, said in a statement.

Japan-based Honda and GM last year announced plans to launch the a joint hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing plant in Michigan. Both car manufacturers currently offer electrical vehicles.

“In addition to our ongoing joint development and production of fuel cells, this battery component collaboration will enable us to take a new step toward the realization of a sustainable society,” said Takashi Sekiguchi, Honda’s chief officer for automobile operations.
