Trump: ‘Fake news’ media focused on ‘small’ protest during Pittsburgh visit

President Trump said Wednesday that the “fake news” made it seem that he was treated poorly in Pittsburgh when he visited Tuesday, but insisted that he and first lady Melania Trump were treated “warmly” and with respect.

“Melania and I were treated very nicely yesterday in Pittsburgh,” Trump tweeted. “The Office of the President was shown great respect on a very sad & solemn day. We were treated so warmly. Small protest was not seen by us, staged far away. The Fake News stories were just the opposite-Disgraceful!”

Some media outlets gave coverage to the protests that ensued as Trump visited the Tree of Life synagogue where 11 were killed by a gunman during Shabbat services over the weekend.

Trump insisted that the protests were not as big of a deal as the media portrayed, and said he didn’t even see them during his visit where he paid his respects to the 11 fallen and visited the wounded in the hospital.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, a Democrat, did not appear alongside Trump on Tuesday, claiming that the visit from the president was a distraction while the funerals were still taking place.

“I do believe that it would be best to put the attention on the families this week, and if he were to visit, choose a different time to be able to do it,” Peduto said. “Our focus as a city will be on the families and the outreach they’ll need this week and the support they’ll need to get through it.”
