The four people killed during the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday were all from outside the Washington, D.C., area, according to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee.
During a press conference on Thursday, Contee identified the woman who was shot and killed by law enforcement as 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt from Huntington, Maryland. The other three who died from medical emergencies were identified as 50-year-old Benjamin Phillips of Ringtown, Pennsylvania, 55-year-old Kevin Greeson of Athens, Alabama, and 34-year-old Roseanne Boylan of Kennesaw, Georgia.
Police are actively investigating Babbitt’s death. Babbitt, identified in media reports as an Air Force veteran who resided in San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital after being shot in the Capitol building and was later pronounced dead.
Hundreds of President Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building after a protest against Congress certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
In total, Contee said 68 people were arrested on Wednesday. Of that number, 60 were men and eight were women. Forty-one of the arrests were made on Capitol grounds. Only one person arrested was identified as a resident of the district. Contee also announced that 56 officers were injured amid the unrest.
Hours after he encouraged a crowd estimated in the hundreds of thousands to march on Capitol Hill, Trump changed his tune and urged his supporters to go home peacefully, adding that he understands how they feel and that he loves them.
Congress was able to certify Biden’s victory early this morning, and Trump promised a peaceful transfer of power on Jan. 20.
The FBI is actively investigating who may have been involved in violent activity, and the Justice Department is expected to announce some charges on Thursday.
