Richard Blumenthal: Trump disrespected sexual assault survivors with ‘vile’ attack on Kavanaugh accuser

Sen. Richard Blumethal, D-Conn., said Wednesday that President Trump was “vile” at his rally Tuesday night for questioning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser’s account of her alleged sexual assault.

“This vile, mocking attack on a credible, immensely powerfully eloquent survivor of sexual assault is a mark of disrespect and disregard not only for Dr. Blasey Ford, but for the entire survivor community,” Blumenthal told CNN Wednesday morning.

Trump questioned Christine Blasey Ford’s recollection of the incident where she claims she is 100 percent certain that Kavanaugh drunkenly groped her at a high school gathering 36 years ago.

Although she says she knows he sexually assaulted her, she admitted that other details of the incident are unclear, such as how she got to the get-together, how she got home, or where the gathering took place.

“‘I don’t know. I don’t know. Upstairs? Downstairs? Where was it? I don’t know. But I had one beer. That’s the only thing I remember,’” Trump said at his rally as he paraphrased Ford.

Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday. Kavanaugh maintains his denial of all sexual assault allegations made against him.

Blumenthal says women who are survivors of sexual assault are afraid to come forward because of “public shaming” and “character assassination” that he claims Trump is putting Ford through.
