Buttigieg joins Sanders campaign in requesting recounts in select Iowa precincts

Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg joined Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in asking Iowa’s Democratic Party to recount votes from select precincts.

Both presidential candidates claimed victory after the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 3, even though official results from the contest were severely delayed after the app for reporting results failed. Meeting a Wednesday evening deadline, Buttigieg and Sanders asked the state party to recount precincts they had previously asked to be recanvassed, according to CNN.

The Sanders campaign filed an official request for a recount Wednesday morning. Buttigieg’s campaign joined in the request hours later. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign helped monitor the recanvassing process but has not submitted any official requests to recanvass or recount votes.

Sanders won the popular vote in the Iowa contest by roughly 6,000 votes. Buttigieg came away with two more delegates if current calculations stand. Sanders was awarded 12 delegates to Buttigieg’s 14.

The Iowa Democratic Party released the results of its partial recanvassing of select precincts on Tuesday, along with an announcement that the corrected tallies would not affect the number of delegates awarded to each candidate ahead of the Democratic National Convention starting July 13.
