Girl Scouts deletes tweet praising Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to Supreme Court after pushback

The Girl Scouts’s official Twitter page deleted a post congratulating Justice Amy Coney Barrett for her confirmation to the Supreme Court.

“Earlier today, we shared a post highlighting the five women who have been appointed to the Supreme Court. It was quickly viewed as a political and partisan statement which was not our intent and we have removed the post,” the account said on Wednesday.

“Girl Scouts of the USA is a nonpolitical, nonpartisan organization. We are neither red nor blue, but Girl Scout GREEN. We are here to lift up girls and women,” it added.

The initial post congratulated Barrett, lauding her as the fifth woman to be on the country’s highest court.

“Congratulations Amy Coney Barrett on becoming the 5th woman appointed to the Supreme Court since its inception in 1789,” the post said.

The post was met with backlash from some, including “squad” member Rep. Ayanna Pressley.

“What kind of patch does one earn for uplifting a woman who is the antithesis of justice?” the Democratic congresswoman tweeted.

Other female Twitter users also slammed the post, with the Girl Scouts responding, “If you would like to debate partisan politics — keep scrolling.”

“She goes against so much of what Girl Scouts stands for — very disappointed in this. This appointment is nothing for girls or women to celebrate,” one woman said.

“Amy Coney Barrett does not represent what I always thought the girl scouts stood for. As a former girl scout this makes me incredibly sad,” another said.

In 2019, the Girl Scouts praised Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor for breaking gender barriers in a tweet that remains live.

“Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor broke gender barriers in the nation’s highest court, but that’s only part of what makes them inspiring role models worth honoring,” the tweet said.

Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court on Monday, with President Trump praising her credentials.

“Over the past few weeks, the entire world has seen Justice Barrett’s deep knowledge, tremendous poise, and towering intellect. She answered questions for hours on end,” Trump said Monday.

“Throughout her entire confirmation, her impeccable credentials were unquestioned, unchallenged, and obvious to all. Justice Barrett earned a full academic scholarship to Notre Dame Law School, graduated first in her class, and served as a clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia. She was a beloved professor at Notre Dame Law School for 15 years before I very proudly appointed her to the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 2017. The American people have been profoundly impressed to learn of her achievements, her compassion, her generosity, her faith, and her sterling character,” Trump added.
