‘He knows us’: South Carolina congressman Jim Clyburn endorses Joe Biden

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn is backing Joe Biden for president.

The prominent Democrat announced his endorsement Wednesday morning, days ahead of the South Carolina primary contest where Biden desperately needs a first-place finish to remain competitive in the fight for the party’s presidential nomination.

“Joe Biden has stood for the hard-working people of South Carolina,” Clyburn tweeted. “We know Joe. But more importantly, he knows us. In South Carolina, we choose presidents. I’m calling on you to stand with Joe Biden.”

The House majority whip, who has enormous influence in his home state, appeared alongside Biden in South Carolina to make the endorsement.

“It is time for us to restore this country’s dignity, this country’s respect. That is what is at stake this year. I can think of no one better suited, better prepared. … No one more committed to the fundamental principles that make this country what it is, than my good friend, my late wife’s great friend, Joe Biden,” said Clyburn, the highest-ranking African American in Congress.

Biden views South Carolina as a must-win state, and he exhibited confidence in Tuesday night’s Democratic debate ahead of the primary on Saturday.

“South Carolina chooses presidents,” Biden said, echoing Clyburn. “I firmly believe once again on Saturday, you hold in your hands, in South Carolina, the power to choose the next president of the United States. I’m here, heart and soul, with everything I’ve got, to earn the support of South Carolina. Nothing is expected or guaranteed. I hope I’ve earned it.

“I promise you this, if you send me out of South Carolina with a victory, there will be no stopping us,” he said.
