A newly-married couple honeymooning in Hawaii was arrested for failing to obey the state’s 14-day self-quarantine mandate for travelers.
Twenty-year-old Borice Leouskiy and 26-year-old Yuliia Andreichenko arrived at their hotel in Honolulu on Wednesday and were read the state’s mandatory order, according to local media.
Under the order, people traveling to Hawaii are required to initial and sign documents confirming they are aware of the 14-day quarantine and acknowledging they understand that violating the order is a criminal offense. However, the couple refused and received repeated warnings before hotel management called the authorities.
“We appreciate the vigilance and cooperation of the hotel staff, and staff at other hotels, in helping maintain the health and safety of visitors and residents,” said Clare Connors, the state’s attorney general.
“It is important that everyone flying into Hawai’i at this time, abide by our mandatory rules,” she continued. “Law enforcement, in partnership with other state and county agencies and the travel industry are continuing to monitor compliance with the mandatory self-quarantine rule.”
People found to be in violation of the order are subject to a $5,000 fine and/or a year imprisonment. Hawaii has even set aside funds to pay for violators to leave the state.
