Texas man gunned down in Chuck E. Cheese parking lot carrying birthday cake for daughter

A man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Chuck E. Cheese in Humble, Texas, while carrying a birthday cake for his daughter’s sixth birthday.

The death of Calogero Duenes, 24, is now under investigation by police. The man’s wife, Amber Uresti, called the fatal shooting “a tragedy.”

“I really can’t wrap my head around it. Like, I’m hurt. I can’t understand how someone can do that to someone that’s holding a cake,” she said, according to KPRC.

Police said surveillance video showed Duenes getting into a verbal altercation with a man in the parking lot Friday. Nearby officers said they heard gunshots and when they arrived on the scene found Duenes with multiple gunshot wounds.

Uresti said she was inside the building with her 6-year-old and 3-year-old daughters when her husband went to fetch the cake.

“I saw him walking towards us,” she said, according to KTRK. “I told the lady my husband was on his way. I pointed at him, and the instant I turned around, he came running in through the door, and he kept saying, ‘I got shot! I got shot!'”

She noted that their 6-year-old child saw her husband fall to the ground.

“He had no weapons,” Uresti said. “He was holding my daughter’s birthday cake. He had nothing on him. I don’t understand why.”

Duenes was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, KPRC reported. Police said a suspect left the scene of the shooting in a burgundy Ford before officers arrived.
