Tour helicopter crashes in lava field on Hawaii’s Big Island

A tour helicopter carrying five passengers crashed on Wednesday evening in a lava field on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The helicopter crashed during a Paradise Helicopters tour around 5:29 p.m. in the island’s southernmost district, Kau, leaving two people with serious injuries, according to KITV.

“The care of our passengers, crew members, and their families is our highest priority, ” Calvin Dorn of K&S Helicopters, the aircraft’s operator, said in a statement.

The 50-year-old male pilot, who had to be extracted from the crash site, and an 18-year-old woman suffered serious injuries. One person was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Rescue efforts were complicated because the crash site was located over a mile from the nearest road.

Paradise Helicopters offers a variety of tours around the Big Island, with views of the mountains, coast, and volcanic craters.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
