Cynthia Nixon endorsed by the New York Democratic Socialists of America

The Democratic Socialists of America chapter in New York announced on Sunday that they are endorsing gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon.

The former “Sex and the City” actress is challenging Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo from a more progressive platform that includes “single-payer” healthcare and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nixon lost her bid Wednesday to secure the New York Democratic Party’s nomination for governor.

Cuomo received 95 percent of the votes cast by delegates attending the state party’s nominating convention, meaning Nixon fell short of the 25 percent votes she needed to be automatically listed on the ballot for the Democratic gubernatorial primary on Sept. 13.

In July, Nixon labeled herself a “democratic socialist,” and announced she was speaking with the New York chapter of DSA.

“Some more establishment, corporate Democrats get very scared by this term but if being a democratic socialist means that you believe health care, housing, education and the things we need to thrive should be a basic right not a privilege then count me in,” Nixon wrote in an email to Politico.

Nixon was one of the first voices to start the wave of Democrats calling for the abolition of ICE, and is one of the only politicians running for office to make it part of her platform.

NY-DSA also endorsed House Democratic Socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in April, who beat out 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in an upset last month.
