‘This has not been a success’: Chris Matthews says Trump ‘chuckling’ as Democrats suffer Iowa caucus delays

MSNBC host Chris Matthews gave a troubling diagnosis for the Democratic Party as it struggled with delays in announcing the results of Monday’s Iowa caucuses.

“The guy in the White House is chuckling all night here, showing the Democrats can’t even get a three-car funeral organized or whatever you want to call it,” Matthews said on the air, referring to President Trump.

Due to problems with a new caucus results reporting system, the outcome of the first-in-the-nation election contest was still unclear as midnight passed and each candidate attempted to put a positive spin on the failed process.

“I would say, to the people of Iowa, will the last person leaving Des Moines please turn out the lights?” Matthews added. “This has not been a success.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign declared it was in a three-way race with Sen. Bernie Sanders and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign demanded “full explanations and relevant information regarding the methods of quality control” before any results are released.

Trump sailed to victory in the 2020 Iowa Republican caucuses, winning the contest with 97% of the vote when the Associated Press made the call. His reelection campaign reacted to the Democrats’ Iowa caucus fiasco by calling it the “sloppiest train wreck in history.”
