Two people who had been on the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise liner died Thursday after becoming infected with the coronavirus.
An 87-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman, both Japanese, were the first Diamond Princess cruise passengers to die after disembarking from the ship and going to a hospital in Japan for treatment. They were among at least 600 passengers on the ship diagnosed with the virus. The ship docked in Yokohama, Japan, the same port from which it had departed, and was placed under quarantine on Feb. 3.
Much like other coronavirus cases, which have primarily affected people over 60, one of the passengers had an underlying health issue, according to NHK World-Japan.
So far, at least 74,546 infections have been reported in China, and 2,118 have died. Most cases are concentrated in the virus’s epicenter, Hubei province.
