Facebook changing news feed algorithm to reduce ‘negative experiences’ with politics

Facebook announced Thursday that it will change its news feed algorithm to reduce political content, in response to user demands.

“Increasingly, we’re hearing feedback from people that they’re seeing too much content about politics and too many other kinds of posts and comments that detract from their News Feed experience,” Facebook announced in a press release on Thursday.

“This is a sensitive area, so over the next few months, we’ll work to better understand what kinds of content are linked with these negative experiences. For example, we’ll look at posts with lots of angry reactions and ask people what kinds of posts they may want to see less of,” Facebook added.

The social media giant said it would be ramping up its direct feedback from users through surveys of their opinion on posts worth their time.

The platform will also get greater clarity from users about which posts people find inspirational, what topics and interests engage them, and make it easier for users to give feedback directly on posts.

This marks the first step and development from Facebook after it revealed in February that it is exploring ways to reduce political content on user’s news feeds.

Facebook’s independent Oversight Board also announced earlier this month that it will make it easier for users to ask to remove content they don’t like, giving the board heightened powers and increasing the amount of censorship possible on Facebook.
