Outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May criticized President Trump’s language toward four female Democratic lawmakers amid heightened tensions between the two countries.
On Sunday, Trump said a group of minority congresswomen feuding with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should “go back” to the countries they came from, despite three of the four women being born in the U.S.
Through her spokesman, May said Monday “the language used to refer to these women was completely unacceptable.”
May’s comments come when tensions between the U.S. and the U.K. are already strained after leaked diplomatic cables showed Kim Darroch, the British ambassador to the U.S., describing the Trump administration in unflattering terms.
Trump, in turn, said his administration would no longer work with Darroch, leading the diplomat to resign, and criticized May’s handling of Brexit.
