MSNBC host Chris Matthews revealed that none of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates excite him on the day of the Iowa caucuses.
Matthews, 74, made the admission about the field during his Monday morning appearance on Morning Joe, which was broadcast from Des Moines, Iowa.
“What are my thoughts? I’m not happy. I’m not happy with this field. I think they have to find a candidate for president that can beat Trump,” Matthews said, adding that he is “still looking” into whether anybody in the field can beat President Trump.
Matthews went on to criticize Bernie Sanders, saying he’s “not going to be president” and that the Vermont senator’s campaign reminds him of the 1972 presidential election in which the Democratic nominee, Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota, won only one state and Washington, D.C., against incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon. He said that McGovern’s campaign “feels a lot like” Sanders and argued that both “excited the party.”
Matthews also said he felt like Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts “was riding high” before getting bogged down by “a lot of scrutiny,” which he predicted could hamper Sanders. Despite his harsh words for the 2020 hopeful, Matthews predicted that Sanders would win the Iowa caucuses “real big.”
