Sen. Amy Klobuchar has revealed she was treated successfully for early stage breast cancer this year.
Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, said the cancer was discovered in February after a routine mammogram at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, followed by a biopsy determining stage 1A breast cancer.
“After a number of other tests, I returned to Mayo and had a lumpectomy on the right breast which involved the removal of the cancer,” Klobuchar, 61, wrote Thursday in a piece published on Medium. “In May, I completed a course of radiation treatment, and after additional follow-up visits, it was determined in August that the treatment went well.”

Klobuchar urged those who have delayed routine physicals and screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic to resume those appointments, noting her screening helped catch the cancer early.
“I am so fortunate to have caught the cancer at an early enough stage and to not need chemotherapy or other extensive treatments, which unfortunately is not the case for so many others,” Klobuchar said.
Klobuchar is chairwoman of the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee and is a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
