Father of Parkland shooting victim removed from State of the Union for protesting

Father of slain Parkland shooting victim Jaime Guttenberg was escorted out of the State of the Union after protesting President Trump on the House floor.

Fred Guttenberg, 54, was invited as a guest of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Tuesday’s annual address. As the president praised the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, Guttenberg could be heard yelling about “victims of gun violence like my daughter.”

Footage of Guttenberg being removed from the gallery by Capitol Police circulated online. Gun control activist and Parkland survivor David Hogg shared the clip, writing, “Tonight he stood up to a president that believes peace and the second amendment are mutually exclusive and was removed.”

While Guttenberg’s protest was difficult to hear over the president’s speech and ensuing applause, some Democrats turned toward him and cheered him on.

Guttenberg also made headlines in September 2018 after attempting to shake then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s hand. He claimed Kavanaugh refused his handshake, but White House officials later confirmed that Kavanaugh was unaware of Guttenberg’s identity.

Jamie Guttenberg was one of 17 people slain by a lone gunman on Feb. 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
