Fourth NYPD officer commits suicide amid police ‘mental health crisis’

A New York Police Department officer apparently shot and killed himself at his home on Long Island, the fourth NYPD officer suicide in June.

The officer worked in the Bronx, according to the New York Post. No more details were immediately available.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill declared a “mental health crisis” in the police force in mid-June after the death of Mike Caddy. The 29-year-old was found dead on June 14 by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his car parked behind a police precinct.

Caddy’s suicide was the third in a little more than a week. Homicide detective Joseph Calabrese, 58, killed himself on June 6 and search crews found his body near a beach in New York.

Less than a day prior to Calabrese’s death, Deputy Chief Steven Silks had committed suicide with a gunshot to the head. Silks’ body was found in an unmarked police car. He killed himself a month before his 63rd birthday, the mandatory retirement age of all NYPD officers.

“You are not alone. Help is here. Reach out,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement following Caddy’s suicide. “We are working with the Police Department to continue to put resources front and center, and that our officers have every possible support.”
