Herman Cain dies at 74 after monthlong fight with coronavirus

Herman Cain has died at the age of 74 after a monthlong battle with the coronavirus.

Cain, a former pizza business CEO and Republican presidential candidate during the 2012 campaign, died Thursday morning at an Atlanta-area hospital where he had been critically ill and placed on oxygen support for weeks, according to Newsmax. He was admitted to the hospital on July 1.

Cain’s death was announced by Dan Calabrese, who edits the website.

“Herman Cain — our boss, our friend, like a father to so many of us — has passed away,” Calabrese said in the blog post. “We all prayed so hard every day. We knew the time would come when the Lord would call him home, but we really liked having him here with us, and we held out hope he’d have a full recovery.”

Cain was diagnosed with the coronavirus less than two weeks after attending a rally for President Trump in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cain was photographed at the event without wearing a mask, but it’s unclear if that’s where he contracted the virus.

Cain, a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, was co-chairman of Black Voices for Trump and was considered for the Federal Reserve by President Trump. He was at a higher risk to contract the coronavirus virus given his age and cancer history.

Cain was diagnosed with colon cancer more than a decade ago, in 2006, and despite it spreading to his liver, he was able to beat the disease and remained cancer-free, according to Newsmax.
