Buffalo shooting suspect set to appear in court Thursday

Payton Gendron, the 18-year-old charged in the fatal shooting of 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket, is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a felony hearing.

This will be Gendron’s second court appearance. Gendron appeared in court on Saturday and was charged with one count of murder. He is expected to face additional charges of murder, attempted murder, and state hate crimes on Thursday. The FBI is also conducting an investigation that could result in federal hate crime charges.

Gendron is accused of shooting 13 people, 11 of whom were black, at the Tops Friendly Markets store in what officials are calling a racially motivated attack. Gendron allegedly arrived at the store with tactical gear on and livestreamed a portion of the shooting.

“This was pure evil,” said Erie County Sheriff John Garcia, calling the shooting a “straight-up racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community.”
