President Trump confirmed his ire over perceived anti-Semitic, anti-American, and pro-terrorist comments made by freshmen Democratic lawmakers in a tweet Tuesday morning. The president tweeted on Sunday that the congresswomen should “go back” to the crime-ridden places they originally came from if they were unhappy with the United States.
The president’s comments were met with outrage from Democrats and several Republicans also condemned his remarks. In a Monday press conference, Trump restated his belief that if the four stridently liberal members of the Democratic Party known as “the squad” were not happy, they were free to leave.
Responding to the tweets and comments in a Monday evening press conference, freshman Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts condemned Trump’s remarks as “xenophobic” and “bigoted” and further stated that the president was “inept,” “corrupt,” and that he was an “occupant” of the White House.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Monday that the House would vote on a resolution to condemn Trump’s remarks, saying his “racist comments … have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer likewise vowed to force a vote in the Republican-controlled upper chamber of Congress.
Trump returned to Twitter on Tuesday morning to further condemn the four freshman congresswomen, saying, “The Democrat Congresswomen have been spewing some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate, & yet they get a free pass and a big embrace from the Democrat Party. Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public … shouting of the F…word, among many other terrible things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills. Why isn’t the House voting to rebuke the filthy and hate laced things they have said? Because they are the Radical Left, and the Democrats are afraid to take them on. Sad!”
