Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said this week that she would like to “figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation.”
When asked on Instagram Live whether or not Congress was discussing a plan for “federal truth and reconciliation” or “media literacy initiatives to help with healing,” Ocasio-Cortez said it was being discussed and that it was an “interesting concept to explore.”
“And we’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation,” the New York Democrat said. “It’s one thing to have differing opinions, but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false. And so that’s something that we’re looking into.”

During the Instagram Live session, Ocasio-Cortez also discussed the violent storming of Capitol Hill by Trump supporters last week, which left five people dead.
“I can tell you that I had a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die,” the congresswoman said. “And you have all of those thoughts where, at the end of your life … all of these thoughts come rushing to you. And that’s what happened to a lot of us on Wednesday. And I did not think — I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive.”
