President Trump implored Republican Sen. Mike Lee to apologize to his constituents in Utah for the conduct of their junior senator, Mitt Romney, for during the impeachment trial.
Romney was the lone Republican to vote to remove Trump from office on the abuse of power charge on Wednesday. During a White House event on Thursday, Trump celebrated his acquittal on two Ukraine-related articles of impeachment, including also obstruction of Congress, and praised Lee while targeting Romney.
He called Lee “a brilliant guy,” and said the senior Utah senator was “right” about the investigation from the beginning.
“Say hello to the people of Utah and tell them, I’m sorry about Mitt Romney. I’m sorry,” Trump stated.
After a round of applause, he continued, “We can say that Mike Lee is by far the most popular senator from the state. You’ve done a fantastic job, Mike, in many ways, in many ways.”
The president also attacked Democrats, the Russia investigation, and the FISA process, while heaping praise on his Republican allies for their efforts to defend him during the impeachment fight.
