Obama Netflix film nominated for best documentary at Oscars

A film produced by the Obama family has earned an Oscar nomination.

American Factory, a Netflix film depicting the story of a Chinese company opening up shop in an abandoned General Motors plant, is among the nominees for best documentary.

The Obamas celebrated the news on social media on Monday.

“It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough and it’s exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with Higher Ground,” former President Barack Obama tweeted of the family’s film company. “Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!”

Former first lady Michelle Obama shared her excitement too.

“I couldn’t be happier that Julia Reichert, Steven Bognar, and all of the incredible people behind #AmericanFactory have been nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar,” she posted on Instagram. “What Julia and Steve capture on film is at times painful, at times exhilarating, but always thoughtful and always real—exactly the kind of story Barack and I wanted to lift up with Higher Ground Productions.”
