A Secret Service agent who was off duty fatally shot a dog that was on a leash in New York City.
The agent, whose name has not been released, was walking through a Brooklyn neighborhood when a dog started barking.
The dog, who police sources and witnesses said was leashed, startled the agent, who pulled out his gun and shot the dog.
“She scared a cop who was walking home,” the dog owner said. “He shot her, and she’s dead.”
The agent claimed that the dog charged at him, according to police.
Secret Service issued an initial statement saying the dog was unleashed, but the agency later clarified that the dog was leashed but “unrestrained.”
“An off duty Secret Service employee was involved in the shooting of an unrestrained and aggressive canine in Brooklyn, NY yesterday. As this is an ongoing investigation, the Secret Service will not have further comment,” a Secret Service spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.
A photo from the New York Daily News showed the dog’s 35-pound body covered by a sheet.
