Justin Trudeau’s wife tests positive for coronavirus

The wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tested positive for coronavirus.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, 44, was confirmed to have COVID-19 on Thursday. She sought out a coronavirus test after she started to suffer a low-grade fever and other flu-like symptoms. The prime minister’s office announced Thursday evening that the test was positive.

“She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild,” Trudeau’s office said in a statement.

The prime minister entered a 14-day self-quarantine as soon as his wife was tested. His office noted that he “is in good health with no symptoms” as of Thursday evening.

Gregoire Trudeau thanked well-wishers but stressed her symptoms were not severe.

“Although I’m experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon. Being in quarantine at home is nothing compared to other Canadian families who might be going through this and for those facing more serious health concerns,” she said.

The prime minister canceled some in-person appearances at meetings throughout Canada, but Justin Trudeau continues to carry out his responsibilities. He spoke on the phone with President Trump on Thursday night to discuss the countries’ economic strategy to deal with coronavirus, according to a readout from the White House.

Gregoire Trudeau had recently traveled to the United Kingdom prior to her diagnosis. Trump restricted all nonessential travel to Europe in an effort to contain the virus, but he did not include England in the list of restricted countries.

More than 1,700 people in the United States have been infected with COVID-19 and 40 people have died, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker. Canada has 117 confirmed cases.
