Steve King compares ‘occupy’ protests at ICE offices to events leading up to Civil War

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, suggested Monday that the U.S. is headed in the direction of another Civil War as tensions rise between protesters and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“America is heading in the direction of another Harpers Ferry. After that comes Ft. Sumter,” King posted to Twitter.

King’s tweet linked to an article on protesters camping outside an ICE office in Portland, Ore., forcing it to temporarily shut down. He compared it to the events leading up to the pre-Civil War raid on Harpers Ferry.

The raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859 was an effort by abolitionist John Brown to start a slave revolt by taking over an arsenal in the then-Virginia, now West Virginia, town.

King said that after these “occupy” protests comes the Battle of Fort Sumter, which was the first action of the Civil War in 1861, and a Confederacy win.

Protests aimed at ICE offices and employees have increased since Trump’s zero-tolerance policy caused an surge in the amount of separations between parents and their children after illegally crossing the border.

WikiLeaks last week published a database of ICE employees’ LinkedIn profiles that doxxed what their positions are, where they went to school, their geographical locations, and other employee and personal information.
