‘Don’t believe that poll for one second’: CNN analyst doubts network figures showing drop in impeachment support among Democrats

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin doubted a poll from his own network that showed support for impeachment from Democrats has dwindled since it was first announced.

The poll from CNN/SSRS revealed that support for impeachment and removal from office dropped from 90% in November to 77% in December among Democratic respondents. During a panel discussion on New Day Tuesday morning, Toobin doubted the results from the poll.

“Can I just say to my twin brother that I don’t believe that poll for one second, the 90% to 77%. It’s just that I don’t believe it. It makes no sense that that number would change like that,” Toobin said.

CNN analyst David Chalian pushed back on Toobin, saying, “I don’t know what’s not to believe. You call people on the telephone. You get their information. You pump out a survey. This is what those that we polled told us.”

Toobin responded, “Life has shown us that polls are sometimes wrong, and David, that poll is wrong. Just because I said so, okay?”

Host John Berman joked that producers were going to cut Toobin’s microphone after he doubted CNN’s poll. Toobin laughed it off, adding, “What do I know, I thought Hillary Clinton was going to win in 2016.”

CNN did not have the only poll showing that support for impeachment is dropping. Gallup released a poll Wednesday morning showing support for impeachment had dropped six points while Trump’s approval rating rose by the same increment.
