After two days in the intensive care unit, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is showing some signs of recovery.
Johnson, 55, was admitted to the hospital over the weekend and moved to the intensive care unit on Monday after facing complications with his coronavirus infection. On Wednesday, a spokesman for the prime minister said Johnson was “stable and responding to treatment.”
Johnson continued to receive “standard oxygen treatments” without a need for a ventilator during his second night in the ICU. His fever has also reduced since entering the hospital.
“He continues to be cared for in the intensive care unit at St Thomas’s Hospital. He’s in good spirits,” the spokesman added.
It is not clear when Johnson will be released from the hospital. Officials at 10 Downing Street said the prime minister has been in contact with his aides but has not done any official work from the hospital. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been overseeing the government in Johnson’s absence.
As of Wednesday, the United Kingdom had nearly 56,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and more than 6,100 related deaths.
