Tesla is recalling over 817,000 vehicles for a faulty seat belt chime.
The defect affects the “audible seat belt reminder chime” that notifies drivers to buckle up when the vehicle is started, according to a safety recall report.
“A software error may prevent the chime from activating upon vehicle start under certain circumstances. This condition is limited to circumstances where the chime was interrupted in the preceding drive cycle and the seat belt was not buckled subsequent to that interruption,” a Tuesday notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated.

The recall covers the 2021-2022 Model S sedan and Model X SUV, the 2017-2022 Model 3 sedan, and the 2020-2022 Model Y SUV.
An accompanying visual seat belt reminder was not affected by the defect, according to the report.
On Wednesday, Tesla recalled nearly 54,000 vehicles over a separate problem that affects the company’s Full Self-Driving (Beta) software, which may erroneously allow a car to travel through an all-way stop intersection without stopping.
