Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York has gathered enough support from GOP party leaders around the state to call the nomination for him, capped off by two big endorsements in the state’s western region.
NEW YORK REPUBLICAN OFFICIALS COALESCE AROUND LEE ZELDIN FOR GOVERNOR
Zeldin, a former state senator, picked up the support of Erie County GOP Chairman Karl J. Simmeth Jr. and Niagara County GOP Chairman Richard Andres, allowing him to surpass the 50% threshold of state committee support to get the party nomination.
By Monday, nearly 30 Republican Party County chairs, representing 52% of the state party members, endorsed Zeldin’s run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with the chairman of Greene County being the latest.
“New York has come to a fork in the road. We can continue down the same path of high taxes, lies, scandals, deceit and more money for New York City’s liberal agenda, or we can work to elect Lee Zeldin to be our next governor. He is the right man, at the right time, who can help to save our state,” Greene County Republican Party Chairman Brent Bogardus said in a statement.
Last Thursday, Zeldin also locked up the endorsements of over half of the state’s Conservative Party chairmen, an important step in securing the Republican nomination. The New York congressman raised more than $2.5 million last month.

Zeldin is one of two Republicans who have declared their candidacy for governor next year. The other being Lewis County Sheriff Mike Carpinelli.
Other Republicans considering launching their own bids include former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, and Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
