Tickets from Bowie speed camera voided

Prince George’s County police voided 18 tickets issued by a errant speed camera in September, saying the speeding drivers were caught by mistake.

A speed camera on High Bridge Road in Bowie was mistakenly programmed to catch motorists on Sept. 25, a Sunday, according to WJLA.

The law in Prince George’s  allows the cameras to operate in designated school zones only on Monday through Friday.

Maj. Robert Liberati said police became aware of the error after the tickets were authorized and mailed to motorists. A letter was sent to each driver voiding the tickets, and the handful of motorists who had already paid the $40 fine were reimbursed.

The mistake was attributable to a human programming error that caused the camera to operate on a Sunday, and not the accuracy of the speed cameras, Liberati said.

Prince George’s County police began issuing tickets to speeding drivers on Sept. 21. Eventually 72 mobile speed cameras will be used at more than 100 sites, 55 of which are established school zones.

The remaining sites are still being tested to determine if speeding is really an issue in the area, according to officials.
