Google announces Pixel 7 and first-ever smartwatch

Google announced its first smartwatch and updated Pixel devices geared to provide better photos and greater privacy.

Google, at its event “Made by Google 22” on Thursday, offered a look at its new Pixel devices meant to compete with Apple and Samsung in the mobile device industry. It also went into detail about the Pixel Watch, the first smartwatch unveiled by the company since it acquired the fitness device developer Fitbit.

Google’s newest device will have its software powered by a mixture of artificial intelligence, the Android operating system, and its internally developed circuitry, Google Tensor.

The Pixel 7 phone comes with a 6.3-inch display, uses the Google Tensor M2 chip, and has up to 72 hours of battery life. The Pixel 7 Pro has a 6.7-inch QHD display and a brighter display. The Pixel 7 also added face recognition, improved processing power, and more efficient machine learning.

The Pixel 7 will also turn audio messages into transcripts and text messages, if needed.

The Pixel 7 camera was promoted as the “best smartphone camera” in the industry with a specific emphasis on improving images through machine learning and hardware improvements. The photo’s software tuning was modified to better account for those with darker skin tones. It also incorporated accessibility features to make the mobile device more usable for disabled people, implemented unblurring software, and added autostabilization.

Security was also a priority during the presentation. Google emphasized that its products focused on minimizing data collection, de-identifying data, and end-to-end encryption to keep user data hidden and private. The Pixel 7 will also come with Google One VPN at no additional cost.

The Pixel 7 will start at $599, and the Pixel 7 Pro will start at $899.

Google also unveiled the Pixel Watch, which offers a similar design to the Pixel 7 and draws from tech developed by Fitbit, which Google acquired in Jan. 2021. The device provides notifications and information from Google Wallet, maps, and more. The device also differentiates itself by constantly tracking a wearer’s heart rate, as opposed to Apple only tracking it once every five minutes when not exercising. The Pixel Watch will be available with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatibility for $349 or LTE compatibility for $399.

Google promised to pursue net-zero emissions in producing the Pixel line by 2030 and claimed that all of its products are made with recycled materials.

The Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Watch are available for preorder, and will be available in stores the week of Oct. 10.
