Trump responds to Supreme Court census citizenship question: ‘Delay the Census’

President Trump called “totally ridiculous” the Supreme Court delivering a blow to his administration’s census citizenship.

“Seems totally ridiculous that our government, and indeed Country, cannot ask a basic question of Citizenship in a very expensive, detailed and important Census, in this case for 2020,” Trump said Thursday on Twitter. “I have asked the lawyers if they can delay the Census, no matter how long, until the United States Supreme Court is given additional information from which it can make a final and decisive decision on this very critical matter. Can anyone really believe that as a great Country, we are not able the ask whether or not someone is a Citizen. Only in America!”

The Supreme Court determined Thursday to send a case involving a citizenship question in the census back to the lower court in a move that was a loss for the Trump administration.

“Altogether, the evidence tells a story that does not match the secretary’s explanation for his decision,” Chief Justice John Roberts said about Wilbur Ross’ explanation for including a citizenship question.

Roberts voted in a 5-4 decision with the four liberal justices on the court in rejecting the administration’s explanation for adding the citizenship question.

Spokesperson Kelly Laco said the Justice Department was “disappointed” by the decision.
