Iranian airliner carrying 144 skids onto major highway in crash landing

An Iranian jet carrying 144 people skidded onto a major highway after crash landing.

Two people were injured in the Monday incident that occurred in Mahshahr, a city in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province. Photos and videos from the scene showed a large jet sitting in the middle of a normally busy highway.

Passengers on the flight exited from the Caspian Airlines jet, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83, from both the main doors and the emergency exits above the plane’s wings. Firefighters arrived at the scene and sprayed water on the jet, which appeared to be largely unharmed.

It is unclear what caused the plane to make the crash landing, and the incident is being investigated.

The crash comes the same month that Iran shot down another commercial airliner, killing all 176 people on board.

The country initially denied that it was behind the downing but later admitted responsibility and said it was a mistake. The revelation was met with protests calling for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to resign.
