A new poll released by Gallup shows almost two-thirds of Americans saying they oppose making Washington, D.C., a separate state.
In the poll released Monday, 64% of those polled said they oppose making D.C. a state, while only 29% favor it.
None of the major subgroups in the poll favored making D.C. a state, with support being highest among liberals at 40% and lowest among conservatives at 14%.
The poll is Gallup’s first nationwide poll on the question of D.C. statehood. A 1989 Washington Post poll on the question of D.C. statehood showed 31% of Americans supported the position while 52% opposed statehood.
