One person killed and two rescued in US Navy plane crash off Eastern Shore

One person was killed and two were injured after a Navy aircraft crashed off the coast of Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore on Wednesday.

The Navy E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft crashed in the Chincoteague Bay near Stockton, Maryland, at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to first responders and the Navy. It had been conducting routine flight operations near Wallops Island, Virginia, before the crash, according to the Navy.

“One person was stuck in the plane,″ Ryan Whittington, a spokesman for Maryland’s Ocean City Fire Department, told the Associated Press.

The deceased crew member was found inside the aircraft, and the two injured people were rescued by Maryland State Police, according to the Navy.

The two rescued people have injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, the Navy said.

The E-2D Hawkeye is manufactured by Northrop Grumman. It is described as an advanced tactical airborne early warning aircraft.

The crashed plane was based out of Naval Station Norfolk and assigned to an East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron, the Navy said on Wednesday.

The names of the crew members aboard the plane have not been released.
